in response to a work in Collective Show Los Angeles 2011- artist Jim McAninch

I gathered Water from the Los Angeles River in the San Fernando Valley at the intersection of Coldwater Canyon Rd. and Oxnard Blvd.
Though small sections are restored to the original ecosystem at this point the river consists of a concrete channel designed by the army core of engineers. It took just under 15 minutes to gather about four gallons of water in a five gallon pail.
Due to framing and nature of the shot it reminds me of a Clifford Still painting with a zip line from Barnette Neuman. This work was based on the question " If I had to gather my water in Los Angeles how would I do it? "It is about a kind of removal.
