Recent Work
This work had its origin when I cast the ubiquitous big mac clam shell in bronze. It was mid 1991 and this was among the first works I made in bronze. Within a few months of the casting I heard in the news that they had agreed with the pressure of ecological groups and were discontinuing the packaging in favor of paper wrappers. There was the immediate
sense that the casting of the clamshell had a magical efficacy- following this was a realization that the sculpture was the only bronze "original " of what was an endlessly reproduced item which would number in the millions in world landfills. Later the original
sculpture combined with a second sculpture giving rise to an oddly figurative work with a kind of house glyph. It was a way to ask a question about an image of a kind of devouring hunger and the idea of home - be it on the small scale of domestic bliss or the large scale of the planet which is in itself consumed.
